Going it alone
Trump's entirely transactional approach to foreign affairs based on what's in it for him, with no respect for the other peoples and nations who are involved and no consideration for long-term stability, is alienating our allies. His playing nice with enemies doesn't change their agendas, since, unlike Trump, personal material greed and a desire to appear strong by bullying aren’t their only motives.
If the US follows Trump's path, we will be going it completely alone. That makes us more vulnerable since we will have no one at our backs and no one sharing vital intelligence. It will also make future transactions more expensive since every nation will have to take into account the likely additional costs of our unilaterally abandoning our promises based on short-term pecuniary impulses. This hurts American businesses as well since no one can afford to trust them. Even if Trump were impeached tomorrow for all of his recent unconstitutional acts and Vance then changed course, the damage Trump has done to the reputation of the United States will still last for generations.
